TODO file for the cpio and pax commands ======================================= The implementation of features is usually delayed even more once they are described in a TODO file. So this file documents not what will be done in the immediate future. Instead, it documents what will probably _never_ be implemented and why. Incremental backups ------------------- Cpio and pax are primarily intended as tools for archive exchange, not for backing up file systems. Incremental backups are therefore outside the scope of this implementation. Sparse file support ------------------- I would implement sparse file support if there were any documented operating system interfaces for detecting holes. But since archives with sparse files are not portable anyway, this is not a real issue for archive interchange and therefore not worth the trouble with the implementation. ANSI standard tape labels (as of ANSI X3.27-1987) ------------------------------------------------- This format is problematic because it can only be used on tapes (it relies on the sequential positioning of several files separated by file marks). No sane person would want to use such a format on Unix today, except perhaps as a wrapper for a single archive file on tape. Moreover, many fields of this format are too small today, e. g. there cannot be more than 999,999 blocks in a volume. As a result, there are no plans to implement ANSI standard tape labels in cpio and pax. There is a Unix implementation called 'ansitar' that was posted on net.sources in 1984 and is still available via Usenet archives. Microsoft CAB file format ------------------------- Since this format requires that the number of files and the total size of the archive are stored at the very beginning of the archive, it does not fit within a sequential access archiving scheme as that of cpio and pax. Writing such an archive to a pipe would require to write the whole archive to a temporary file first, setting the numbers at the beginning once the archive was written and then starting to write to the pipe. As sizes and counts in this file format are restricted to 32-bit integers, it could not be used as a general purpose archiving format today. Thus an implementation in cpio and pax could not work satisfactorily and will probably never be done. There is a program named 'cabextract' that can read such archives. In my opinion, there is no reason to create such archives for data exchange anyway since the zip format can be read in many more environments and does not exhibit any of the weaknesses of the CAB design.
